Head to Head Sector Assault Turn 7 through 22 + Dev notes

The Federation forces never recovered from the loss of their fleet in system
1, but they managed to stop the Klingons from advancing from that system. In
a heroic battle, the heavy cruisers USS Shatner and USS Arizona destroyed
the IKS Tong Ve. Both ships had suffered massive damage, but combined forces
to fend off the invader. They were destroyed in the battle.

The Klingon fleet now stands at four ships, with a fifth close to
completion. When the sixth is ciomplete, the fleet will be ready to move
through the sector and start to choke off Federation resources through
destruction of their convoys. While they do that, Klinzai shipyard will
continue to build ships to aid in its defense against random Federation
attacks.

Dev notes:
While the Head to Head aspect had little actual play, because the Feds got
taken out pretty quickly, this has been the toughest sector assault I've
played yet. Knock down drag out is the word. Using names for ships adds a
bit of atmosphere to it, and the random rolls have shown the potential for
an interesting game.

Head to Head Sector Assault Turns 3 and 4 + Dev Notes

At the end of Turn 2, The Federation 1st Fleet had made it through the first
construct turn without challenge, while the Klingon 1st Fleet was wiped out
in a punishing defeat, only staying in the game by capturing three of the
attacking Federation ships. Turn 3 brought a stunning reversal of fortune.

The Federation 1st Fleet was destroyed, leaving three Klingon heavy cruisers
(KCA IKS Kor KCA IKS Kang KCA IKS Koloth) undamaged, and prepared to occupy
system 1. In System 5, the Klingon 1st Fleet, consisting of the captured FCA
USS Hornet FCA USS Entebbe FCA USS Bozeman proceeded with turn 2 of KSY
Klinzai without challenge. Turn 4 would continue to cast a shadow over the
Federation cause.

System 5: KF1 (captured FCA USS Hornet FCA USS Entebbe FCA USS Bozeman)

KSY Klinzai complete.

Four Federation heavy cruisers (FCA USS Christopher FCA USS Belknap FCA USS
Gideon FCA USS Riverside) attacked the Kang, Kor and Koloth in System 1.
After a punishing battle, the Belknap, Gideon, Riverside, Kang and Kor had
been destroyed, and the Christopher had been heavily damaged. (10/15
damage). Boarding parties from the Koloth beamed to the struggling
Christopher and captured the bridge, ending the battle. It remains to be
seen if they can survive and start pushing through towards friendly space.
The Christopher is in no shape to enter combat, but may not survive the two
turns sitting still necessary to repair. Probably they'll move to open
space, where there is a smaller chance of a random heavy fleet attack and
the chance of destroying enemy convoys, thereby reducing the Federation's
random fleet numbers. At the same time, the Klingon 1st Fleet heads for open
space next, where it will hunt convoys and start to slice away at the
Federation's economic resources.

On the developer side, so far so good. The only balance issue I see is the
overwhelming edge that the "elite" ranking gives me in boarding party action
(extra 3d6 roll added to ranks) makes my troops pretty much unstoppable
unless they are extremely outnumbered

Head to Head Sector Assault

I've started to play the Head to Head Sector Assault, and before the fleets have really clashed, it is already a tough game. Here are the rules, as adapted from the Simple Sector Assault:

Rules

Objective:

The goal is to conquer and hold all 5 systems.

In order to do this, you must conquer, then sufficiently defend the systems while denying your enemy access to those same systems. Reduce the enemy fleet sufficiently to prevent them from building a shipyard, and stop/destroy enough enemy convoys to deny random reinforcements sufficient to threaten your shipyards. You must also attain a minimum of 13 points (see 'Victory Conditions' below)

System Conquest:

Regardless of whether a system has been taken by enemy forces, you will face a random-sized enemy fleet upon first arrival in a new system. Roll 1d6 for size of enemy fleet, then subtract any applicable random fleet disadvantage (see below). Then use appropriate simple combat template. All surviving ships retain damage but can move and fight until destroyed. They can only be repaired by remaining in place for two turns (subject to random enemy attack each turn) or by docking at shipyard for one turn. The system remains yours once you've defeated the initial fleet, but if left undefended, any attempt to conquer it will only be countered by a randomly generated friendly fleet. You can (and should) choose to leave any combination of ships and/or a shipyard to defend it.

Open Space:

Enemy convoys will only be encountered in open spaces. Roll for encounter (3/6 chance). Then roll 1d6 for enemy escorts. 1-3= 1 CA escort. 4-6= 2 CA escorts. The random fleet disadvantage does not affect this. Random enemy convoy(s) must be stopped=at least 3/5 freighters destroyed or captured (5/15 damage and successful boarding party action), escorts destroyed or disabled (10/15 damage) in 5 volleys or less. Every convoy that is stopped decreases random enemy fleet size by one. This is the random fleet disadvantage. For every three freighters captured, your random fleet disadvantage is reduced by one. You will not encounter convoys in open spaces when you have conquered both adjacent systems

Enemy forces may be encountered in all open spaces (even between two conquered and held systems). Roll for encounter (2/6 chance), Roll for size of enemy fleet (use same method as in-system combat).

Shipyard:

Shipyards are recommended. They can only be built in systems that you hold (by destroying an initial randomly generated assault fleet). Three starships must remain in system or open space area for three turns to build shipyard. During each turn 50% chance of random attack. (1d6: 4-6) LOS (line of sight) must be maintained to use or attack shipyard. Shipyard has X75 multiplier. Shipyard can construct replacement ships in 3 turns. While your fleet can not exceed 6 ships, additional ships built at shipyards do not count against this total. They cannot fight with full-sized fleets, but can supplement diminished fleets. The same rule applies to surviving random reinforcements. Since you must have a minimum of three ships to build a shipyard, it is recommended that you build at least one shipyard and at least two reserve ships just in case of unforseen losses. A fleet reduced to two ships and no shipyard to fall back would have little chance of victory.

Victory Conditions/Points-

Shipyards 5 (max)

Fleet size 6 (max)

Reinforcement capacity 6 (max)

You must conquer 5 systems and attain 13+ VC points

If you want to register as a player, notify me through here, or by leaving a comment on the blogsite http://fantasytrek.blogspot.com . I recommend keeping a record of your games played, as they add up to experience points that enrich your gaming experience.

Here are the turn logs so far. I'm keeping things a bit more organized, necessary, I think, with at least two fleets operating at the same time. I'm also using ship names rather than simply F1 and K1, etc.

Turn 1)

(1209.13)

System 1: FCA USS Essex FCA USS Challenger FCA USS Tahir FCA USS Robau FCA USS Abrahms FCA USS Orci form Fed 1st Fleet (FF1). Contact: 4 KCA's *won toss. Turn 1 was fairly uneventful. Both fleets formed, both won their toss, and both beat back the random enemy assault. Turn 2 was where things started to get interesting...

Turn 2)

FCA USS Hornet FCA USS Entebbe FCA USS Bozeman captured. FCA USS Hornet FCA USS Entebbe FCA USS Bozeman now constitute KF1.

As the fleets started to build their shipyards, the Feds went unmolested, but the Klingons ran into serious resistance. Five FCA's took them on. The Klingons lost the toss, and it cost them.

Once the Federation shields were dropped....

KCA IKS D'Han KCA IKS Glommer transport total 8 boarding parties to Hornet(3), Entebbe(3) and Bozeman(2).

In this case, my "elite" ranking provided me with the edge (a total of four boarding parties per ship as opposed to the enemy's one) I needed to overcome Federation defences:

vs Hornet

a)6  a1)6  a2)6  a3)4  winner:k
b)4  b1)6  b2)3 b3)4  winner:k

d)6  d1)5  d2)6  d3)6  winner:k
e)2  e1)1  e2)2  e3)5 winner:k

Of course, the ships were still fighting while this went on:

KCA IKS D'Han  rolls:40 o/40d

KCA IKS Glommer  rolls:40 o/40d

FCA USS Hornet  rolls:60 60(D'Han)o/d

FCA USS Entebbe  rolls:50 5(D'Han)45(Glommer)o/d

results

KCA IKS D'Han destroyed

KCA IKS Glommer destroyed

FCA USS Hornet damage: 5/15

FCA USS Entebbe damage: 9/15

FCA USS Bozeman damage: 5/15

KCA IKS Glommer KCA IKS D'Han destroyed. FCA USS Hornet FCA USS Entebbe FCA USS Bozeman captured.

Just to note: If the two Klingon ships had survived the first volley, they wouldn't have been destroyed, because the boarding parties overwhelmed the Federation defences that quickly. As it turns out, the Klingon fleet was destroyed, but boarding parties captured the three surviving Federation ships, and used them to continue building the shipyard that they'll need to replenish their numbers. All in all, this is shaping up to be quite a contest. The Federation 1st Fleet is now facing five randomly generated Klingon CA's that have won their toss. If those Klingons can capture those Fed ships, they'll be able to dominate the battlefield (pushing inwards from systems one and five), and the Feds will have a huge disadvantage. Of course, I've seen that before and been shocked at the turnaround. This kind of game really highlights the importance of the simple combat and boarding party format.

Complete Simple Sector Assault and Dev diary

This Simple Sector Assault that began on 1109.13 was just intended as a
casual play-through. It involved into a fairly evolutionary playtest for
Fantasy Trek. I realized that I wasn't subjecting shipyards to the
every-other-turn random attack. So I realized that I needed a turn log. That
progressed pretty well until what I thought was going to be the end. Then a
random attack against KSY1 by three Fed Ca's was successful. They ran up the
blue flag, and built their own shipyard. I realized at that point that the
"AI" in Fantasy Trek that exists as a result of the random rules had finally
taken a big step on its own and forced me to adapt the game to suit. I
realized that I needed to make this a head-to-head challenge. While the
original Simple Sector Assault was, as the name says, simple, and playable
in a pretty casual manner, it tended to be a bit one-sided and lacking in
strategy. So Head-to-Head Sector Assault will have its own rules, points
system (Shipyards: 5(max), Fleet size: 6 (max), Reinforcement capacity: 6
(max) ) and Victory Conditions (be the first to conquer and hold 5 systems
and attain 13+ VC points).
The rules are essentially the same, with slight changes in the
shipyard/reinforcement areas. I'll play them through and report here. And of
course if any of you lurkers is intrigued, let me know, and once I get over
the shock, I'll send you the rules as they are so you can help to playtest
it through.
Here are the turn logs for this lengthy but valuable simple sector assault

Admin Updates

While I work through a slightly advanced version of the simple sector conquest, I am also working on a trading card/collectible card game for Fantasy Trek. Anyone reading this is encouraged to submit any ideas or things they'd like to see in a TC/CCG. I am also rethinking the summary of events. Rather than not manage several storylines that do not have any active players or input from any players but me, I am only going to update things that any actual players are doing. As any readers (and I know you're out there) decide to take part, I'll incorporate their play/storytelling. This will lighten the workload for me and enable me to refocus on the command college. Look for some award structures to be announced. I have the 'etlh komerex that I'm pretty happy with, and since I am approaching the 200 simple combat engagements mark, I am thinking that there needs to be that structure. Probably the 'etlh komerex will be awarded for Klingon registered players at the 200 simple combat engagements point. I'll come up with one for the 100 point, and probably up through 500. Then we start adding notations, along the lines of "oak leaf clusters" that are attached to medals in the military. Of course, there will be similar awards for Federation and Romulan players.

I am also getting ready to start to put pencil to paper for the graphic of the Klingon 'etlh class heavy cruiser. I do have a sketch of a Federation Constitution Phase Two Class. Again, any readers who are artistically inclined, please feel free to draw, scan, and submit.

Finally, I am looking for opinions about incorporating events from Star Trek Online, which is being phased into semi-canon, thanks to its tie-in with the latest movie, and a planned book.

Even if you are just reading and not interested in actively playing, I really welcome any feedback.

DusaQ VeS: Mission 6: "Invasion"

Mission Summary:

As the Sha'kurian device is being studied, it explodes, destroying the
captured freighter and the FF N'taka. Rift opens through debris, revealing
two Sha'kurian heavy carriers. Scans reveal five more launching from a
shipyard on the other side of the rift. Destroy carriers quickly (3 volleys)
before they can pass through the rift. Then destroy shipyard in five volleys
before carriers can launch. If you fail, a carrier will launch every two
volleys. Then pass through the rift to discover what lies beyond.

Objectives:
Survive Combat
Assist the fleet
100+ word log

"It is said that no battle plan survives the first moments of a battle.
Sometimes, despite our efforts to gather intelligence and plan accordingly,
we are faced with a relentless, implacable enemy that lunges for our throats
even as we reach for our weapons. At that point survival depends on our
ability to strike quicker than our enemy. There is no time for planning or
careful placement of assets. Each warrior may be either the forward lunge
that strikes a mortal blow, or the weak point in our armor that relegates us
to passengers on the barge of the dead. Honored dead, but still dead. You
must be the teeth at the enemy's throat. Strike with speed and ferocity.
Especially in the case of invasion, you must attack with every resource,
stopping the enemy before they can establish a beach head. Every second that
is lost is territory and momentum lost. Strike as if your very culture
depends on it, because it does. Strike hard. Strike mercilessly. And if your
enemy finally falls back in retreat, do not allow him the luxury of
regrouping or succor. Follow him to his home, and burn it to the ground so
that it can never again give rise to invaders."

Stardate 1209.06 Command candidate Sompek, IKS tIHoy. Tal'Ihnor Gates system
As we were examining the device that the Sha'kurians were building, it
exploded. The N'taka and the captured construction ship were immediately
destroyed. There was not even any debris thrown off. In the aftermath of the
explosion, a rift opened up. While I assume that the device was meant to
open this rift, and it simply went off prematurely, there was no time for
scientific analysis. Two Sha'kurian heavy carriers started to emerge from
the rift almost immediately, Quick scans revealed five more carriers
preparing to launch from a shipyard just beyond the rift. We must destroy
these carriers and the shipyard before the five carriers can launch, or we
will certainly be lost. Once we've destroyed the shipyard, I am confident
that General Kapact will order an offensive through the rift.

We fell upon the two unprepared carriers, overwhelming them before they
could mount any serious defense.

We then pushed through the rift, uncertain of where we were going, or if we
could return. But I felt a surge of excitement. Command, with all its
uncertainties, was starting to acquire a reality. A fine balance, like the
weight of a good bat'leth.

Then we faced the shipyard. It was an ungainly thing, with five elongated
pods around a central angular mass that bristled with weapons emplace. The
pods each held a heavy carrier, with work crews and construction craft
obviously working feverishly to complete the mammoth ships so that they
could be launched against us. As we made a coordinated approach, my tactical
officer detected weapons locks from several of the shipyard's emplacements.

Fortunately, General Kapact detected the weapons lock and ordered me to take
evasive action. This was not, he explained afterwards, cowardice or a
selfish attempt to protect me. It was, rather, a tactical move to protect an
important part of the fleet. In any case, the tiIHoy survived the encounter,
and the enemy shipyard did not. Now we push on into the great unknown. And
victory.

Stardate 1209.04 IKS Ab'Qaff ChaHom System-Aftermath of Destruction of Romulan forces.

There have been no indications of further Romulan incursions in this system, and a small observation outpost built by the construction ship Ketha will conclude our mission here. We only await the arrival of a Vulcan courier who will take a sample of the Vulcan hull fragments back to a trusted source within their science directorate. I am not entirely happy to be trusting a Vulcan with this material.
Despite their protestations of complete inherent honesty, I know for a fact that Vulcans keep secrets with the best. Better than the best in fact. But this is also a mystery that cannot be solved without access to Vulcan
databases and ancient libraries that I could never get to.When the courier arrives, I will transport the samples, and then leave with great relief.
